Exhibition. Karen and Kate are inspired by their personal and spiritual reactions to the world around them. Karen is influenced by animism and a long-standing interest in the significance of consciousness to the existence of the universe and of man and our interactions with an inner life. Kate spends time in wild places (Shetland, Orkney, the Hebrides and in Italian national parks) quietly watching and communing with animals in order to capture the consciousness of their behaviour in her work.

Context and Form, Art and Writing is an art.earth short course led by artist Chris Drury and writer Kay Syrad, with guest artist David Buckland.
Join us for this residential week as we continue our explorations of relationship with landscape. Part of art.earth’s compelling new programme of short courses. Context and Form, Art and Writing is facilitated by environmental artist Chris Drury and writer Kay Syrad. Their special guest is David Buckland, Founding Director of Cape Farewell.
In this five-day intensive, Chris Drury shares his renowned practice of working with form, including whirlpool and vortex, fractal and wave patterns, exploring and investigating how aesthetic forms have the universal enfolded within them but are at the same time particular to individual experience.

Exhibition runs from May 18 to June 18 with work by Bob Budd, Walter Lewis and Ruth Packham.
Join us for a meet the artists reception on Friday, 18th May from 18:00 to 19:30.
Overview: these three artists, who have very different approaches and methods to their creative ideas and processes, are observers of rural life. Animals, plants and people are focal points for study, reflection and inspiration. The interactions between farmers and their livestock, the form and structure of plant life and the practices of small-holders are all considered in this exhibition.
Bob Budd: As someone who grew up on a London council housing estate, then moved to the countryside, the encountering of farm animals left me with a strong, but also, contradictory impression. I was fascinated by the presence of animals in everyday life, appearing wholesome in a rural setting –– and yet unnatural –– the animals made to play our tune, not theirs, unable to follow their own desires.
Walter Lewis: In this photographic project Feeding Body and Soul I tell the story of a group of people in England and Wales who have rejected globalised, factory-scale food production, and instead chosen to produce food in ways which are actively regenerative of land, environment and community.
Ruth Packham: I have been working with wool fibre for over 10 years in what feels like a love affair with the material. The work I am exhibiting here is me allowing myself to be more conceptual, to hone my felt making skills and to work through ideas of form and structure. Feltmaking lends itself to the making of natural forms and some of the pieces are directly inspired by my observations of plant life.

Embodying the Line: writing, movement and radical presence
A rare opportunity to work with two practitioners who are coming together to explore language and movement. Poet Alyson Hallett and dancer/movement artist Deborah Black are thrilled to be able to work together at Dartington, a centre of enquiry and experimentation. Embodying the Line is a unique opportunity to bring two different disciplines together and allows us to ask:
During the course we’ll delve into what we call this radical presence as a way of deepening and expanding our awareness. We’ll open ourselves up to our myriad connections with trees, rivers, buildings, birds, sky, stones. We’ll fire and inspire the imagination with exciting writing exercises and spark new rhythms of movement with ideas that introduce us to new perspectives.
At the heart of the course is a sense of play and open enquiry. There will be time to nourish individual as well as collaborative work, time for speaking and being quiet, time for documentation and creating community. As language rises up within us, we will bring awareness to words as well as to the movements of our bodies.
