from Creative Scotland:
LOCUS: Open Call
Deadline: 23 October 2019 at 17:00
LOCUS is a contemporary art trail being devised around the centre of Lerwick (Shetland) by Shetland Arts in partnership with Living Lerwick.
LOCUS will consist of up to four commissioned works of public art located at predefined sites that will act as town placemakers, animate the area and offer a new way to engage with contemporary art and the environment. This Open Call is for artists of all disciplines with relevant experience to apply to be part of this project. Up to four artists will be commissioned to create up to four works.
An accompanying trail map will act as an interpretive guide, incorporating existing public artworks to create a wider trail. The self-led walking trail will encourage people to consider the town and its amenities with a fresh perspective. Our ambition is for a series of striking visual artworks that create a narrative on Lerwick and its connection to the past, present and future.
LOCUS will connect business, place, art, the community and visitors to the town. The work will be commissioned via an open call/selection process, responding to a brief on the theme of placemaking: Where we are / Where we’re going / Where we’ve come from
The scope is broad to encourage as diverse an approach as possible.
The lifespan of the trail is envisaged to be a minimum of 5 years.
Fees and costs
There is an artist fee of £3000 per commission, and it is envisaged that there will be four commissioned works by four separate artists. This fee is to include the design and delivery stages of the work.
Up to £800 will be available for travel to and accommodation in Shetland for Phase 2 (Design) and a further £800 for Phase 3 (Delivery) of the project for each artist based outwith Shetland. Each artist will be responsible for his/her travel arrangements and accommodation, however the project team at Shetland Arts will be able to offer advice and assistance.
A budget of up to £5000 per work is available for fabrication/manufacturing costs to include transport of work to Shetland where necessary. (We are keen to build links with local industry, to facilitate manufacture/fabrication of the work where possible.)
Location: Shetland Islands
